W. H. Cannon is of German and Irish ancestry, and was born near Pittsfield, Ill., August 1, 1862. He attended the public schools of the community until he was eighteen years of age,
when he entered Eureka College, where he completed the classical course in June, 1884. In
1889 he received from the same institution the degree of A. M. He attended the Bible department of Drake University for a little while, but lacked one year of graduation. From childhood he has had a desire to be a preacher, and his work in college had that aim constantly in view. December 31, 1882, he preached his first sermon, and was ordained by the church at Eureka in June, 1884. Immediately after leaving college he located at Sterling, Ill. Besides Sterling he has had pastorates at Illiopolis, Lincoln, Lexington, and now ministers to the church at Eureka.
In addition to his regular ministerial work he has been interested in Sunday-school work, and has been a member of the Executive Board of the Illinois Christian S. S. Association for four years, and is at present Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer of that organization.
