Kissam, Henry Snyder, architect; born, in New York City, Feb. 22, 1866; son of Benjamin Adrian and Sara A. (Snyder) Kissam. He was educated in public schools and by private tutor, and was graduated from Columbus University in the architectural course with the degree of B.S., 1886, and studied in Paris, 1886-1888. Mr. Kissam resided in Tacoma and practiced architecture in Washington State, 1888-1892, and since 1892 has practiced in New York City. Republican; Episcopalian ; executor of the Estate of Benjamin A. Kissam, Administrator of the Estate of Col. Henry D. H. Snyder ; vice-president of the Rosenfield Kissam Co. He is a member of the Architectural League of New York City; president of the Alumni Association of the School of Architecture of Columbia University; member of the Alumni Association of the School of Mines of Columbia University and of its Board of Governors; member of the American Society for Promoting Efficiency, the Psi Upsilon fraternity, Society of Colonial Wars, Sons of the Revolution, Order of Founders and Patriots of America and of The University, Psi Upsilon and Columbia University Aldine Clubs of New York City. Kitchin, Claude, United States congressman from the second district of North Carolina, was born March 24, 1869, in Halifax County, N.C. Since 1890 he has been engaged in the practice of law. He was elected to the fifty-seventh, fifty-eighth, fifty- ninth, sixtieth, sixty-first and sixty-second congresses ; was reelected to the sixty-third congress for the term of 1913-15; and resides in Scotland Neck, N.C.

Klein, Paul, lumberman of 201 West Madison St., Iola, Kan., was born Sept. 7, 1856, in Mascautah, Ill. He has been in the mercantile business since 1887 at Utica, Kan. He is now state senator from the fourteenth senatorial district of Kansas.

Knight, Henry Granger, of Laramie, Wyo. Chemistry, was born, Bennington, Kan., July 21, 1878. A.B., Washington (Seattle), 1902, A.M., 1904; fellow elect., Chicago, 1903. Asst. chem., Washington (Seattle), 1900-01, instr., 1901-02; asst. Chicago, 1902-03; asst. prof., Washington (Seattle), 1903-04; prof. Wyoming and state chemist, Wyo., 1904-11; director, Exp. Sta., 1910-; dean Ag. College, 1912-. Potable waters ; effect of salt solutions upon seeds.—Food adulterations: Wyoming forage plants; soil; wool ; poisonous plants ; soil nitrogen ; meteorology.

Knopf, S. Adolphus, physician and surgeon of New York City, was born Nov. 27, 1857, in Germany. He received a thorough education ; and has attained success as a noted consulting physician of New York City. He was vice-president of the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis; and in 1905 was a delegate to the International Tuberculosis Congress at Paris, France. He is a director in the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis; and associate-director of the Health Department's clinic for pulmonary diseases. In 1913 he was awarded the Hodgkins prize offered by the Smithsonian Institution on the subject of The Relationship of Atmospheric Air to Tuberculosis.

Knowland, Joseph Russell, congressman, was born Aug. 5, 1873, in Alameda, Cal. He is associated with his father, Joseph Knowland, in the wholesale lumber and shipping business; and is a director of the Union Savings Bank of Oakland and the Alameda National Bank and Alameda Savings Bank of Alameda. Was a member of the California Legislature, 1899-1903, and in 1904-05 was a member of the fifty-eighth congress as a Republican to fill vacancy and a member of the fifty-ninth, sixtieth, sixty- first and sixty-second congresses. He was re-elected to the sixty-third congress from the third district of California for the term of 1913-15.

Knowles, William Hyer; born in Pensacola, Fla., Dec. 27, 1857; son of Peter and Josephine (flyer) Knowles. He attended Pensacola's private schools and the University of the South, at Sewanee, Tenn., and has been connected with banks as clerk and officer ever since leaving school. He is an Independent Democrat, an Episcopalian, a Mason, Knight Templar, and Shriner. His favorite recreation is golf. Mr. Knowles is a member of the Army and Navy and Lawyers' Clubs of New York City, and of the Osceola and Pensacola Country Clubs of Pensacola. He married in Newbern, N.C., Nov. 24, 1885, Mary Daves Ellis (eldest daughter of Governor John W. Ellis, who was governor of North Carolina in 1860), and they have five children. Residence : "Harbourview," Pensacola. Office : Pensacola, Fla.

Knox, Willis Robert, farmer, banker ; born Intercourse, Pa., July 3, 1871; orphan in infancy; foster parents: Robert J. Knox and Mary Ann (Diller) Knox; 'educated public schools of Intercourse, Pa.; attended Millersville State Normal School, summers of 1889 and 1890. Taught public school from 1889 to 1898; grew and sold farm seeds for ten years ; gave up seed business to devote entire time to the Intercourse Bank, which he had helped to organize ; president and director First National Bank of Intercourse, Pa., secretary and director Intercourse Telephone and Telegraph Co.; director Lancaster County Agricultural Fair Association. Served three years as county committeeman of township. Democrat. 

Kokes, Vincent, banker ; born in Bohemia, March 16, 1866; son of Joseph and Anna (Borka) Kokes ; educated public schools and realschule, Bohemia ; married, Wahoo, Neb., Sept. 20, 1892, Lydia Ledvina ; one son. Came to the United States alone and settled at Ord Valley County, Neb., Dec., 1881, where started to work in drug store ; opened drug store under the firm name Schaffer & Kokes at the age of 21; purchased Mr. Schaffer's interest 1891, becoming sole owner and selling same, 1893. Cashier Ord State Bank, 1900-1908; since then president : also director Bank of Scotia, Scotia, Neb. Elected county clerk of Valley County, Neb., four consecutive terms; served on City Council, Board of Education and city treasurer of Ord, Neb. Republican ; Catholic. Knight of Pythias. Konig, George, congressman, was born on a farm at North Point, Baltimore County, Md., Jan. 26, 1856. He is now the superintendent and general manager of the Baltimore Pulverizing Company, one of Baltimore's leading manufacturing enterprises. He has served two terms in the first branch of the city council of Baltimore. He was elected to the sixty-second and sixty-third congresses.

Konop, Thomas F., congressman, was born Aug. 17, 1879, in Kewaunee County, Wis, Since 1904 he has practiced law ; and has served three terms as district attorney of his county. He was elected to the sixty-second and sixty-third congresses as a Democrat : and resides in Kewaunee, Wis.

Korbly, Charles A., senator, was born March 24, 1871, in Madison, Ind. He has never before held office; was elected to the sixty-first, sixty-second congresses as a Democrat, and was reelected to the sixty-third congress for the term of 1913-15 ; and resides in Indianapolis, Ind.

Kovarik, Alois Francis, educator and scientist of Minneapolis, Minn., was born on March 8, 1880, in Spillville, Iowa. He has received the degrees of A.B., A.M. and. Ph.D. In 1904-12 he was instructor and since 1912 assistant professor of physics in the University of Minnesota. He is author of a monograph on the effects of changes of pressure and temperature in gases upon the velocity of a negative ion produced by the ultra-violet light.

Kramer, Wilbur Heath, public official of Franklin, St. Mary's Parish, La. For many years he has been prominently identified with the business and public affairs of his city, county and state. He has, filled several positions of trust and honor ; and is now serving as clerk of Franklin, La.

Kreider, Aaron S., United States congressman from the eighteenth district of Pennsylvania, was born June 26, 1863, in Lebanon County, Pa. He is a successful shoe manufacturer. He was elected to the sixty-third congress for the term of 1913-15; and resides in Annville, Pa.

Kuhn, Ferdinand E., merchant; born in Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 3, 1861; educated in the parochial and public schools, and at Notre Dame University (degrees of B.S. 1893, and Master of Science, 1895) ; is a member of the firm of 13.S., Cooper & Geary, the largest retail shoe store in the south ; is a member of the Elks, and the Knights of Columbus ; married .Catherine Wall. Kuhne, Percival, banker and financier of New York City, was born April 6, 1861, in New York City. He was educated in the College of the City of New York, and continued in Germany his preparation for a business career. In 1884 he entered a banking house of Knauth, Nachod and Kuhne, founded by his father, whose interests, in both New York City and Leipzig, he succeeded in 1893, from which he retired as an active partner on Dec. 31, 1909. He is a member of the New York Chamber of. Commerce, and was a founder and organizer of the Colonial Trust Co., which was subsequently merged into the Trust Co. of America. He is also a trustee of the Citizens' Savings Bank ; a trustee in the Empire Trust Co.; a trustee in the Lincoln Safe Deposit Co., and is closely identified with the affairs of several other prominent institutions. He is a veteran of Company K, Seventh Regiment, New York National Guard ; is a prominent Mason, and a member of the Union, Metropolitan and Union League Clubs of New York City.

Kurtz, Theodore M., senator and coal mine operator of Punxsutawney, Pa., was born in Young Township, Jefferson County, Pa., Feb. 27, 1868; educated in the common schools and at Waynesburg College ; served one term as burgess of Punxsutawney and four terms as chairman of the Republican county committee; was formerly one of the publishers of the "Punxsutawney Spirit"; is at present engaged in the coal business; elected to the senate in November, 1908; re-elected, 1912.
